Cornell's current student administration system is comprised of more than twenty distinct and complex computing systems that have been internally developed, supported, and maintained over the last three decades. Many of these use ADABAS/Natural as their operating platform. The new central system offers integrated functionality with distributed access, making data input, storage, management, and retrieval across the university more consistent, reliable, scaleable, and efficient. Records will be stored using more sophisticated tracking systems, providing more reporting options and allowing the university to keep a complete history of its administrative data for the first time.
The STARS project is implementing the following main Oracle PeopleSoft Student Administration system components: Admissions, Student Records, Academic Advisement, Financial Aid, Student Financials, and related Self-Service applications. Components will be implemented in phases that complement the business cycles of the business areas impacted. Admissions involves processes that support recruiting, admitting, and matriculating new students. Student Records includes processes that support students while they are attending the university, such as registration, enrollment, grading, graduation, and transcript production. Academic Advisement involves processes used by both students and their advisors to monitor academic progress. Financial Aid encompasses handling various forms of monetary awards and/or loans provided to students to cover the cost of attending the university. Student Financials covers bursar services, such as billing for tuition and other student fees. Self-Service refers to applications that provide an intuitive web interface to the system that enables users to obtain and update their own data.
